Technology, Dean and movies

Stavrou: You started on Days of our Lives then went onto Dark Angel, Smallville and now Supernatural. How was the transition from daytime soap opera to prime time?

Jensen Ackles: It’s been good. To be honest, with the soap opera’s daytime format, you really learn a lot very quickly. It’s almost like boot camp. Within the week you either know your lines, hit your mark, find your light or you just sink.

So it’s kind of like tossing someone who doesn’t know how to swim into a pool and seeing if they’re going to survive. Sink or swim.

I think that early on (I think I was 19 when I started on Days of our Lives) it taught me a lot about the technical aspects of acting.

You know, making sure I could see the camera and that the camera can see me, making sure I feel the light, learning pages and pages of dialogue a day. That’s daytime (soap opera).

So all that training in that format from television really got me ready for pretty much anything.

So when I was done there and moved on to prime time, it was a pretty seemless transition.

I knew the technical aspects and that’s one thing that - and (co-star) Jared’s (Padalecki) very good at it too - our camera guys and the people we work with love us for because it makes their job easy.

So that’s a big thing. And it’s tough too. All these guest stars come on and they’ll be so involved in their performance that they’re four feet off their mark.

Well guess what? The director of photography didn’t light you over here so you’re not in the light. Not to mention the focus puller didn’t have marks for you so you’re out of focus, not lit, so your performance is useless.

So that kind of stuff is very important - people don’t realise that. I attribute a lot of knowledge of that to daytime television.

Stavrou: You also went from television to movies. You recently did My Bloody Valentine 3D. How was that?

Jensen: That was cool. That was quite a different experience because of the 3D aspect. I’m kind of a technology geek. I’m really into technology so when they said it was going to be done in 3D I was kind of really interested - I was like ‘yeah, that sounds very interesting’.

And it was. It was a different process than what I’m used to - dealing with two cameras simultaneously at all times. Everything’s got to be lit really heavy, really hot, and there are a lot of different tricks you have to play with in 3D.

Everything is shot a little wider because you want to feel more of the world as opposed to Supernatural where everything is really tight, right up in your face.

You had to be a little more expressive with your body language as opposed to your facial expressions.

So it was just little things like that.

After the first day of filming, I had to slightly adjust my way of doing things just because of the format in which we were filming.

Stavrou: That was your first big movie?

Jensen: First theatrical release, yeah.

Stavrou: How much do you and your Supernatural character Dean Winchester share in common?

Jensen: We look alike (laughs). I’d say, at first, when we were shooting season one, we kind of shared a lot of similarities. I was still figuring out the character so I was relying on myself - my own experiences, my own traits - to convey that.

But over the past several seasons he’s really taken on a life of his own so now he’s definitely a character. He and I don’t have a lot of things in common anymore.

But it’s why I do this (points to his beard), grow my hair out a little bit, because it’s kind of a way for me to get rid of that identity for a while.

Stavrou: You tried out for the role of Sam Winchester originally. So if you had gone for that part first, obviously, you’d have a feel for that character as well?

Jensen: Right.

Stavrou: But what about the humourous side of Dean?

Jensen: I would say that’s the main reason I was attracted to that role more than I was to Sam. Not to take anything away from the character (of) Sam - it’s still a very important character, a very well-written character - but I just really liked the humour Dean brought to the table. I felt like it was something I could comfortably do.



Eye of the Tiger, season six and Smallville

Stavrou: What was the inspiration for the Eye of the Tiger outtake at the end of ‘Yellow Fever’? (season four

Jensen: That was honestly a fluke that lasted longer than it probably should have. It really was. Jared decided not to come in when he was supposed to. I kind’ve knew the words to the song and I thought it would be funny to just mouth some of the words.

The cameras kept rolling so I kept going.

I learnt a lot of sports when I was young and coach used to tell me “play ‘till you hear the whistle” so that’s kind of what I was doing there.

I thought “hey, if he’s not going to say cut, I’m going to keep going”.

Stavrou: They’re talking about bringing in another character who’s supposedly your brother. What can you say about that?

Jensen: He’s not joining us; he’s not going to hop in the back of the Impala and be with us for the next two seasons, three seasons, however long we go.

But he comes in and kind of lays a shocker down. It’s something to deal with and move on from.

Stavrou: Last month you were picked up for a fifth season - that’s great news.

Jensen: That is great news.

Stavrou: How long are you guys contracted for?

Jensen: For six (seasons).

Stavrou: Are you happy to do six seasons?

Jensen: It all depends. If we do as well as we did this year, next year it will probably look like ... I don’t know what (show creator) Eric (Kripke) has planned.

If he can eke out another season then we can probably go six. There’s a lot of x-factors, a lot of x-factors.

Stavrou: Also, you don’t want to go too long? Smallville is now going into its ninth season, and it’s dropped off a bit.

Jensen: Well Al (Gough) and Miles (Miller), the creators, aren’t even there anymore. That’s one thing ...

I love Tom (Welling). I think he’s got a great thing going on and I know that he’s made the most of his situation (which is great) but at the same time, he and Allison Mack are the only two left from the original cast.

So, do I envy that aspect of it? No.

You know, I don’t want the show to change so much that it’s like it’s taken a complete different life of its own, which that one kind of has.

You know, they still get three-four million people watching every week ... that’s business then it turns into a business.

Stavrou: was it because of your work on season four of Smallville that they put you on Supernatural - because it was the same network?

Jensen: I wouldn’t say that entirely. Director David Nutter,, who directed the pilot of Supernatural, knew me from Dark Angel so I would probably say it was more because of Dark Angel.

I would say it made it a little easier to get me because I was already on the network. So was Jared so they basically just yanked us off their existing shows and gave us a new (one).

I was supposed to do two seasons of Smallville but they ended up killing me after the first one just because I had to do Supernatural.


Stavrou: You know, I envy you for working with Jessica Alba (on Dark Angel).

Jensen: You and a lot of people.

Stavrou: Do you have any other movie projects coming up?

Jensen: No. You know, we’ve been pretty much going solid straight since the writers strike ended over a year ago.

We finished up on season three then I went off to Pittsburgh to do Valentine. Jared went down to Austin to do Friday (the 13th).

As soon as we were done with the movies, we went straight back up to Vancouver to start season four.

So, I needed some time (off). I need some time just to take a break, relax, see my family, see my friends, spend some time with my girlfriend - that kind of thing.

So for right now, season five is the only thing I’ve got my mind on.

Stavrou: I know a fear of actors is being typecast. Given the theme of Supernatural, you both went off and did horror pictures ...?

Jensen: I don’t think that was necessary, you know. It was really just a sheer coincidence because we has a small limit of time to do anything. It just so happened that there were two movies of the same genre that were filming in that timeframe.

I mean, there were several other movies I was meeting on that were completely different.

One was a romantic comedy, one was (I think) like a war movie, but the schedules conflicted so I couldn’t do it.

So that was the only thing that really fit.

Not to say that’s the reason why I did it but, you know, I was considering it before I knew the schedule.

But ultimately when it came down to it, those were the only two movies that really fit.

Stavrou: What would you like to do in the future post-Supernatural?

Jensen: Keep doing interesting roles, you know, keep working with talented people.

I just love telling stories. That’s what we do and it’s a good business to be in, especially if you know you have talent.

Stavrou: For you it runs in the family anyway.

Jensen: This is true. I did learn a lot from my dad. He’s a big storyteller too.

Stavrou: You actually did a movie together, didn’t you?

Jensen: We did. It was a little independent scary movie and when the director asked (they had already cast me) “listen, any ideas for the role of your father?”, I said, “I’ve got a whacky idea!”

It was cool. He came up, we shot a few days; it was good. The movie didn’t really do anything but it was fun to work with him.

Vous avez commencé dans Days of oyr Lives, puis continué dans Dark Angel, Smalville et maintenant Supernatural. Comment s’est passé la transition entre le soap opéra en journée et le prime time ?

Elle s’est bien passée. Pour être honnête, le format du soap opéra vous permet d’apprendre beaucoup de choses très rapidement. C’est presque comme un camp militaire. En une semaine, soit on connait ses répliques, on prend ses marques et on trouve sa lumière, soit on coule. C’est comme si on jetait quelqu’un qui ne sait pas nager dans une piscine pour voir s’il va survivre. On coule ou on nage.
Je pense qu’à cette époque (je pense que j’avais 19 ans quand j’ai commencé sur Days of our Lives), j’ai appris beaucoup de choses sur les aspects techniques du jeu d’acteur. M’assurer de pouvoir voir la caméra et que celle-ci peut me voir, de trouver l’éclairage, apprendre des pages et des pages de dialogues en un jour. C’est le format du soap opéra.
Tout cet entrainement m’a préparé à presque tout. Et quand je suis passé au prime time, c’était une transition assez intégrée. Je connaissais les aspects techniques et c’est une des choses qui font que les cameramans et les gens avec qui on travaille nous adorent – Jared est aussi très bon pour ça aussi – parce que ça rend leur travail pus facile.
C’est donc une chose importante et difficile aussi. Toutes ces guest stars arrivent et sont tellement à fond dans leur performance qu’ils se trouvent à 2 mètres de leurs marques.
« devine quoi ? le directeur de la photographie ne t’a pas éclairé ici, tu n’es donc pas dans la lumière. Sans parler de l’assistant caméra qui n’a pas de marques pour toi, ce qui fait que tu es hors champ, sans éclairage, et que ta performance est inutile.
Ce genre de chose est donc très important, et les gens ne s’en rendent pas compte. Je dois beaucoup de mes connaissances au soap opéra.

Vous êtes aussi passé de la télévision au cinéma. Vous avez récemment tourné My Bloody Valentine ; comment c’était ?

C’était cool. C’était une expérience assez différente à cause de l’aspect 3D. Je suis un peu accro aux technologies. C’est vraiment mon truc, donc quand ils ont dit que ça allait être tourné en 3D, ça m’a intéressé – je me suis dit : « oui, ça semble très intéressant. »
Et ça l’était. C’était un processus différent de ce dont je suis habitué – avoir affaire à deux caméras en même temps et tout le temps. Tout doit être éclairé de manière très forte, chaude et il y a différents trucs avec lesquels jouer en 3D. tout est tourné en un peu plus large parce qu’on doit sentir un peu plus ce qu’il y a autour de soi, contrairement à Supernatural où tout est très proche du visage. On devait être un petit peu plus expressif avec le langage du corps plutôt qu’avec les expressions faciales. C’était donc des petites choses comme celles-là. Après le premier jour de tournage, j’ai dû légèrement ajuster ma manière de faire les choses à cause du format dans lequel on filmait.

C’était votre premier grand film ?

Oui, première sortie au cinéma.

Quelles sont les choses que vous avez en commun avec votre personnage Dean Winchester ?

On se ressemble physiquement (rire). Je dirais, qu’au totu début, quand on tournait la saison une, on partageait beaucoup de choses. J’atais encore en train de découvrir le personnage, et donc je me basais sur moi-même, mes propres expériences, et traits de caractère, pour l’exprimer.
Mais au cours des dernières saisons, il a vraiment pris vie, et c’est maintenant un personnage à part entière. Lui et moi n’avons plus beaucoup de choses en commun. C’est pourquoi je fais ça (il pointe son doigt vers sa barbe), je fais pousser un peu ma barbe, parce que c’est une manière pour moi de me débarrasser de cette identité pendant un temps.

Vous avez auditionné pour le rôle de Sam à l’origine. Donc si vous vous êtes dirigé vers ce rôle au départ, de toute évidence, ce personnage vous avez plu aussi ?

C’est vrai.

Mais qu’en est-il du coté humoristique de Dean ?

Je dirais que c’est la raison principale qui m’a attiré vers ce rôle plutôt que vers celui de Sam. Ce n’est pas pour enlever quelque chose au personnage de Sam, c’est un personnage très important et très bien écrit, mais j’ai juste vraiment aimé l’humour que Dean apporte. J’ai senti que c’était quelque chose que je pouvais faire aisément.

Eye of the Tiger, saison 6, et Smalville

Quelle a été l’inspiration pour la prise Eyeoh the Tiger à la fin de l’épisode Yellow Fever ?

Honnêtement, c’était un coup de veine qui a duré plus longtemps qu’il n’aurait dû. Vraiment. Jared ne s’est pas montré au moment où il était censé le faire. Je connaissais les paroles de la chanson et j’ai pensé que ça serait drôle de juste d’articuler quelques mots.
Les caméras ont continué à tourner et j’ai donc continué.
J’ai fait beaucoup de sport quand j’étais jeune et le coach me disait de « jouer jusqu’à entendre le coup de sifflet », et c’est en quelque sorte ce que j’ai fait ici. J’ai pensé, « hé, je vais continuer jusqu’à ce qu’il « coupez » ».

Ils parlent d’introduire un nouveau personnage qui est apparemment votre frère ? que pouvez-vous dire à ce sujet ?

Il ne nous rejoint pas. Il ne va pas monter à l’arrière de l’Impala et rester avec nous pour les deux, trois prochaines saisons, peu importe combien de temps on continuera.
Mais il arrive en effet et crée un choc. C’est une chose qu’on doit régler et ensuite avancer à partir de là.

Le mois dernier, la série a été renouvelé pour une cinquième saison, c’est une bonne nouvelle.

Oui, une très bonne nouvelle.

Combien de temps dure votre contrat ?

Pour 6 saisons.

Êtes-vous content de faire six saisons ?

Ça dépend. Si on fait aussi bien que cette année, l’année prochaine ressemblera probablement à ... Je ne sais pas ce qu’Eric a prévu. S’il peut faire une autre saison, on pourra donc probablement aller jusqu’à une saison 6. Il y a beaucoup de facteurs à prendre en compte.

Aussi, vous ne voulez pas faire durer tout ça trop longtemps ? Smallville entre maintenant dans sa neuvième saison et l’intérêt a un peu diminué.

Al Gough et Miles Miller, les créateurs, ne sont même plus là. C’est déjà une chose...
J’adore Tom Welling. Je pense que c’est une bonne chose pour lui de continuer et je sais qu’il a donné le meilleur de lui, ce qui est génial, mais en même temps, lui et Allison Mack sont les deux seuls qui restent du cast original.
Donc, est-ce que j’envie cet aspect-là ? Non.
Vous savez, je ne veux pas que la série change au point où c’est comme si elle avait pris vie de manière complètement différente, ce qui est un peu le cas pour Smallville. Vous savez, ils sont toujours 3 à 4 millions de téléspectateurs qui regardent chaque semaine... c’est du business.

Est-ce à cause de votre travail dans la saison 4 de Smallville qu’ils vous ont pris dans Supernatural, parce que c’était la même chaine ?

Je ne dirais pas que c’est entièrement le cas. Le réalisateur David Nutterr, qui a dirigé le pilote de Supernatural, me connaissais de Dark Angel, je dirais donc que c’est plus à cause de Dark Angel.
Je dirais aussi qu’il était un peu plus facile de m’avoir parce que j’étais déjà sur la chaine. De même pour Jared, et donc en gros, ils nous ont juste sorti des séries existantes pour nous en donner une nouvelle. J’étais censé tourner dans deux saisons de Smallville mais ils ont fini par me tuer après la première juste parce que j’ai dû faire Supernatural.

Avez-vous d’autres projets de films ?

Non, on a pratiquement enchainé depuis la fin de la grève des scénaristes il y a plus d’un an. On a fini la saison 3 et je suis parti à Pittsburgh pour tourner My Bloody Valentine. Jared est allé à Austin pour Vendredi 13. Dès qu’on avait fini avec les films, on est revenus directement à Vancouver pour commencer la saison 4. J’avais donc besoin de repos. J’ai besoin de temps pour faire un epause, me détendre, voir ma famille, mes amis, passer du temps avec ma petite amie, ce genre de choses. Donc pour l’instant, la saison 5 est la seule chose qui me trotte dans la tête.

Je sais que les acteurs craignent d’être catalogués. Etant donné le thème de Supernatural, vous avez fait tous les deux des films d’horreur... ?

Je ne pense pas qu’on y était obligé. C’était une coïncidence pure parce qu’on avait peu de temps pour tout faire. Il s’est juste avéré qu’il y avait deux films du même genre qui étaient tournés à la même période. Il y avait d’autres films qu’on m’a proposés et qui étaient complètement différents. Il y avait une comédie romantique, un autre qui était je pense un film de guerre, mais les plannings ne coïncidaient pas et je n’ai donc pas pu les faire.
C’était donc vraiment le seul film qui convenait. Je ne dis pas que c’est la raison qui m’a poussé à le faire, mais vous savez, j’y pensais avant de connaitre les plannings. Et en fin de compte, quand on a dû voir ça de plus près, c’était les deux films qui nous convenaient vraiment.

Qu’aimeriez-vous faire après Supernatural ?

Continuer à avoir des rôles intéressants et travailler avec des gens talentueux. J’adore raconter des histoires. C’est notre métier et c’est un secteur dans lequel il est bon d’évoluer surtout quand vous savez que vous avez du talent.

Pour vous, ça reste une affaire de famille de toute façon.

C’est vrai. J’ai beaucoup appris de mon père. C’est un grand conteur d’histoires aussi.

Vous avez fait un film ensemble, n’est-ce pas ?

Oui, c’était un film d’horreur indépendant et quand le réalisateur m’a demandé, alors que j’avais déjà été casté, « écoute, tu as des idées pour le rôle de ton père ? », j’ai répondu, « j’ai une super idée ! » c’était cool. Il est arrivé, on a tourné quelqus jours ; c’était bien. Le film n’a pas vraiment fait de bruit mais c’était amusant de travailler avec lui.
