In TV Guide: Supernatural Preview: A Special Holiday Episode, Season 4 and More


Ho, ho, ho, Deaniacs and Samaholics, Supernatural (9 pm/ET, CW) hasn't forgotten you at you at holiday time. Exec producer Eric Kripke is gifting you with a very gory Christmas episode next week and he's telling us all about it — there's some revelations fans should eat up — as well as offering up some hints of episodes to come.

TV Guide: So what is the Supernatural take on Christmas?
Eric Kripke: I grew up loving Christmas specials; Rudolph, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town. I got it into my head that I wanted to do Supernatural's version of a Christmas special. We wanted to be the first — and I'd imagine only — Christmas special complete with impalements, cannibalism and torture scenes. [Laughs] What I really rub my hands together in glee about is that we are far and away the most violent Christmas special in the history of television. That's really fun. As we researched legends for the show, we came across this worldwide one about an anti-Claus — if God has the Devil, then Santa Claus has this creature. He stuffs his victims in sacks and takes them off to eat them.

TV Guide: Oh no, a really, really bad Santa!
Kripke:.One of the things I'm really proud of in this episode is that the legend is one of our most accurate, not just in discussion of the anti-Claus, but also when you research Christmas you discover that the vast majority of Christmas traditions are actually pagan. So is Easter.

TV Guide: Isn't that a little gutsy of you to point out on American TV?
Kripke: [Laughs] We just report the news.

TV Guide: Where do the pagans fit into the story?
Kripke: The implication of there being an anti-Claus means that there actually is a Santa Claus and the writers and I couldn't quite bring ourselves to say that there was such a thing as Santa Claus. So we moved on to the Pagan god, which is called Hold Nickar. Generally thought to be the precedent to Santa Claus.

TV Guide: You have the violent cynical pagan holiday story but then you have moving flashbacks to the young Winchesters, don't you?
Kripke: Yeah, it felt like such a natural to tie it into the Christmas episode. Those kids — Ridge Canipe plays Dean and Colin Ford, Sam — are-terrific. We love exploring the childhood of the boys and to be able to tell the story of the day that Sam lost his innocence not just that there was no such thing as Santa Claus but that there was such a thing as everything else, was too good an opportunity to pass up.

TV Guide: What kind of revelations are there in the boys past?
Kripke: It explains where Dean got his necklace that he wears in every single episode. It explains the beginning of Sam's estrangement from his father and his indoctrination into the supernatural world. It's quite a big moment.

TV Guide: How many episodes do you have left?
Kripke: Christmas will be Episode 8 and we will have four more before we go into repeats. If it ends in December, I think we'll be able to pick back up in January without missing too many episodes, only one or two. If the strike heads off into January or God forbid, February, then we really need to have a conversation about how scaled back the season is going to be.

TV Guide: Will Sam's quest to keep Dean alive be ongoing in those four episodes?
Kripke: Yeah. We actually spend a little more time with how Dean himself feels about going to Hell because right now he's accepting that he's going to Hell and he's unwilling to do anything to stop it. That changes 180 percent in Episode 10. Something big happens to him that makes him realize he desperately wants to live and he desperately doesn't want to go to Hell. We also have a great Groundhog day episode coming up.

TV Guide: Where a day keeps repeating itself?
Kripke: Sam basically wakes up every day and it's the same day and Dean dies at the end of every single day. It's actually quite funny. Dean dies maybe 10 different ways on camera, and off camera, maybe he dies 200 different ways. Sam doesn't go through just three or four Tuesdays, he goes through something like 150 Tuesdays. We have a great witch episode and we have a big mythology episode where we pay off the Agent Hendrickson storyline in a very climactic way.

TV Guide: What's happening with Ruby and Bella?
Kripke: Ruby is appearing in that episode with Hendrickson; she's also appearing in the witch episode. We reveal something pretty surprising about her backstory. She's a demon, and we learn a lot about demons and how they came to be demons. Bella makes an appearance in a dream episode, where Sam and Dean take this medicine man drug where they go dream walking, which is going into other peoples' dreams. So we spend the majority inside Bobby's dreams, inside Dean's dreams,

TV Guide: Your fans seem to hate any woman who comes on the show. Are they coming around?
Kripke: My fans are a protective bunch. I hope we're winning them over. Last season, they had such issues with the character Jo. And privately, I thought the character as we wrote her wasn't working out. This season, I love both these girls and both these characters. They're really interesting and bring something different to the table.

TV Guide: I have to ask you about Katie Cassidy's (Ruby) arrest-underage drinking, lying to a cop. How has that affected the show?
Kripke: I don't have anything to say about that. It hasn't affected the show at all.

TV Guide: Are you planning for Dean's future to be resolved this season? If the strike allows it, of course.
Kripke: We have this storyline that we're building towards — whether Dean goes to Hell and what's really happening to Sam, dovetails together in a really surprising and satisfying way. If we have a full season, Dean's time will come up and we'll definitely answer what team Sam is going to be fighting for. If we have a half a season, stay tuned for Season 4. So we're excited by that story and we hope to tell it this year.

TV Guide: What can we look forward to with post-strike eps?
Kripke: There's a fun one where we bring back the Hellhounds, the bumbling ghost hunters back from Season 1. The whole show is an episode of their reality show. So we're shooting an entire show on hand-held video Blair Witch-style. Like when X-Files did their episode of Cops. It's our loving tribute to Ghosthunters on Sci Fi.

TV Guide : Que nous propose Supernatural pour Noël ?
Eric Kripke : J'ai grandi en aimant Noël, Rudolph, le Père Noël venaient en ville. J'avais ça en tête et j'avais envie de faire un épisode de Supernatural avec une version spéciale de Noël. Nous voulions être les premiers -et j'imagine les seuls- a faire un Noël spécial complet avec des empalements, du cannibalisme et des tortures. [Rire] Je me frotte les mains de joie, c'est que nous avons de loin l'épisode spécial Noël le plus violent de la télévision. C'est vraiment amusant. Lorsque nous faisions des recherches sur les légendes pour la série, nous sommes tombés par hasard sur cet anti Père Noël -si Dieu à le Diable, en bien le Père Noël a cette créature. Il enfouit ses victimes dans son sac et les mange.

TV Guide : Oh non, un très, très méchant Père Noël !
Eric Kripke : Une des choses dont je suis le plus fier dans cet épisode, c'est que la légende est une des plus juste, et pas seulement dans les discussions sur l'anti Noël, mais lorsque vous faite des recherches sur Noël, vous découvrez qu'une grande partie des traditions sont païennes. De même pour Pâques. (NdT : et pour toutes les fêtes chrétiennes qui sont des anciennes fêtes païnnes. Si Noël tombe le 25 décembre, c'est pas pour rien !)

TV Guide : Ce n'est pas une façon un peu téméraire de vous faire remarquer à la télé américaine ?
Eric Kripke : [rire] nous venons juste d'annoncer la nouvelle.

TV Guide : Comment les païens rentrent dans l'histoire ?
Eric Kripke : Le lein est que s'il y a un anti Père Noël, c'est que le Père Noël existe, et les scénaristes et moi, nous ne pouvions nous résoudre à dire qu'il existait quelque chose comme le Père Noël. Donc nous avons changé pour un dieu païen qui s'appelle Hold Nickar. Il est souvent considéré comme le précurseur du Père Noël. (NdT : semble que Hold Nickar vienne des légendes Teutoniques. Il serait l'équivalent de Poseidon dans la mythologie grecque. Il aurait été christianisé pour devenir Saint Nicolas. "Hold Nickar" aurait aussi donné l'expression "Old Nick", désignant Satan).

TV Guide : Vous avez une histoire de Noël païenne, cynique et violente mais dans laquelle vous placez des flash-back sur l'enfance des Winchester, n'est ce pas ?
Eric Kripke : Oui, cela nous semblait tout naturel de lier tout ça dans l'épisode de Noël. Les enfants -Ridge Canipe qui joue Dean et Colin Ford pour Sam- sont géniaux. Nous aimons explorer l'enfance des garçons et de pouvoir montrer le jour où Sam a perdu son innocence et non pas parce que le Père Noël et tout ça n'existe pas, mais parce que tout le reste existe, c'était une trop bonne occasion pour la laisser passer.

TV Guide : Quels genres de révélations sur le passé des garçons ?
Eric Kripke : il explique comment Dean a reçu son collier qu'il porte dans tous les épisodes. Il explique comment Sam a commençé à s'éloigner de son père et son embrigadement dans le monde du surnaturel. C'est un grand moment.

TV Guide : Combien d'épisode avez-vous encore ?
Eric Kripke : Celui de Noël sera l'épisode 8, et nous en avons encore quatre avant que cela ne soit des rediffusions. Si tout ce termine en décembre, je pense que nous serons en mesure reprendre en janvier sans que nous ne perdions trop d'épisodes, seulement un ou deux. Si la grève continue en janvier, et Dieu nous en préserve, voire en février, il faudra avoir une sérieuse discussion pour comment réduire la saison.

TV Guide : C'est quatre épisodes seront sur la quête de Sam pour garder Dean vivant ?
Eric Kripke : Oui. Nous avons passé beaucoup de temps sur Dean et sur ce qu'il resentait par rapport à sa damnation, et pour l'instant il accepte d'aller en Enfer et il ne fait rien pour aller contre. Cela change à 180° dans l'épisode 10. Quelque chose d'important lui arrive et il réalise qu'il veut vivre et qu'il ne veut vraiment pas aller en Enfer. Nous avons aussi un bon épisode dans le style "Groundog day" à venir (NdT : Un jour sans fin, film de 1993 avec Bill Murray et Andie MacDowell).

TV Guide : Un jour sans fin ?
Eric Kripke : En gros, à chaque fois que Sam se réveille, c'est le même jour, et à chaque fois, Dean meurt à la fin. En faite c'est drôle. Dean doit mourir de 10 façons différentes devant la caméra, et hors caméra, peut-être de 200. Sam ne va pas que vivre 3 ou 4 mardis, mais plus quelque chose comme 150 mardis. Nous avons un bon épisode sur des sorcières et nous avons un grand épiosode mythologique avec l'agent Hendrickson dont la storyline finit sur un paroxysme.

TV Guide : Que se passe-t-il avec Ruby et Bella?
Eric Kripke : Ruby fait une apparition dans cet épisode avec Hendrickson ; elle est également présente dans l'épisode sur les sorciéres. Nous y révélons quelque chose de très surprenant à son sujet. C'est un démon, et nous apprenons beaucoup de choses sur les démons et comment ils sont devenus démons. Bella fait une apparition dans un épisode sur les rêves, où Sam et Dean prennent un médicament (NdT : là, il y a un trou car pas comprendre), qui permet de rentrer dans les rêves des autres. Donc, nous passons la majorité de l'épisode dans les rêves de Bobby et de Dean.

TV Guide : Vos fans semblent haïr toutes les femmes qui arrivent dans la série. Et là ?
Eric Kripke : Mes fans sont une sorte de sécurité. J'espére que nous arriverons à les convaincre. La saison dernière, ils se sont beaucoup interroger au sujet du caractére de Jo. Et en privé, je pense que le personnage, comme nous l'avons écrit, ne marchait pas. Cette saison, j'aime autant les actrices, que leurs personnages. Elles sont vraiment intéressantes et apportent quelque chose.

TV Guide : Et au sujet de Katie Cassidy (Ruby) - arrêtée en état d'ivresse alors qu'elle n'a pas encore l'âge, et qu'elle a menti à la police. Comment cela a-t-il touché la série ? (NdT : l'actrice a bien été arrêté en état d'ivresse, alors qu'elle était passagére, le 15 novembre 2007, à Tuscon, Arizona. N'ayant pas 21 ans, elle était cependant en infraction. Elle doit passer devant le tribunal le 18 décembre 2007).
Eric Kripke : Je n'ai rien à dire sur ce sujet. Cela n'a pas affecté la série.

TV Guide : Avez-vous prévu de résoudre le futur de Dean dans cette saison ? Si la grève dure, bien sûre.
Eric Kripke : Nous sommes en train de travailler dessus - Si Dean va en Enfer et ce qui va vraiment arriver à Sam, tout cela se rejoignant de façon assez surprenante et satisfaisante. Si nous avons une saison entière, Dean va épuiser tout son temps et nous verrons comment Sam va se battre pour que cela n'arrive pas. Si nous n'avons qu'une moitié de saison, nous le garderons pour la saison 4. Nous sommes contents de cette histoire et nous esprérons pouvoir tout faire cette année.

TV Guide : A quoi devons-nous attendre après la grève ?
Eric Kripke : Il y a un épiosde drôle où nous revoyons le Hellhounds, les chasseurs de fantômes maladroits de la saison 1. C'est un épisode dans leur reality show. Nous tournons un épisode entier, caméra à la main dans le style Blair Witch. Comme "X-Files" l'avait fait avec l'épisode "Cops" (NdT : 7x12, datant de 2000). The last of Supernatural's pre-strike episodes, "Jus In Bello," has aired. Intense and heavily myth-arc based, the episode leaves fans with a long wait until April 24, when the last four episodes of season three start to air. Sera Gamble, producer and writer for the show, agreed to talk to Firefox News via email about what it's like to get back to work, why the staff is laughing, matching tattoos, savvy fans, and how rough things could get for Sam and Dean Winchester. (Spoiler warning for upcoming episodes).

FFN: How did being on strike affect you as a writer? Were you able to work on any independent projects?
SG: Well, the main effect, of course, was that I had to stop working. And I was involved in a couple of projects that lost momentum -- one might be salvageable, but I'm pretty sure the strike killed the other one. I'm philosophical about that -- I expected it to happen. Almost every writer I know took a hit for the strike. And plenty were fired or had their shows canceled, so all in all I was very lucky. I had a job to go back to. And yes, I did try to use my strike time wisely. I saw the fact that I was barred from writing anything for the studios as an opportunity to work on stuff that I could never pitch as a slick, easily-understandable commercial package.

I picked my favorite weird idea and immersed myself for a few weeks. It worked, too -- the run-up to the strike was hugely stressful, and I was burned out and exhausted. Now, I feel back in touch with why I love writing.

FFN: What's it like getting back to work? Are people charged up? Is it a smooth process picking up where you left off?
SG: By three o'clock on the first afternoon, we were all half-joking that it felt like we never left. I was afraid it would be complete chaos, because we only had three weeks to get up and running before production resumed. But everyone came in focused and ready to make it work. It's actually gone much more smoothly than I anticipated. One funny thing that happened: the first script in the hopper was almost complete before we left work, and it's kind of hilarious in its new context.

It's a light, high-concept episode – shot entirely in documentary style by these bumbling would-be ghost hunters we introduced in Season One. The whole hour is the “pilot” of a cable show called “Ghostfacers!” So it's quite a departure from our usual structure. And it’s completely self-enclosed and breezes right past all the mythology we set up in “Jus In Bello”, which was great when we had lots of time before we had to close in on the end of that arc.

In fact, it was necessary breathing room for our audience before we pounded them with Dean's deal coming due. But being part of the final run of this shortened season, being the first episode when we come back, gives it a sort of importance that it's definitely not engineered for. We all laugh about it -- it's just one of those out-of-our-control things that happened because of the strike, and we rolled with it. I think our audience will too -- they're savvy, and they'll get it. And it's a wildly entertaining episode, so for my part, I'm glad we get to do it. I would have been so sad if the strike went longer and it didn't get shot.

FFN: How will the foreshortened season three affect the stories we'll get in the next four episodes?
SG: Some story threads were condensed, and some were set aside for next season. We had to be creative with the storytelling, but these weren't difficult decisions to make. It was obvious which story had to be serviced: Dean's demon deal. His time’s running out; he’s going to hell. They've got a very short time to try to save him. The Season Finale takes place on Dean’s last day.

FFN: What about season four, are you optimistic?
SG: If this were Vegas and I had $100 in my pocket, I'd put $92 on a Season Four pickup. Then spend the other $8 on a strong drink if I'm wrong.

FFN: On "Dream A Little Dream of Me," Cathryn Humphris has the teleplay credit, and you and she share the "story by" credit. Can you talk about developing the episode and how that co-writing process worked?
SG: “Dream” wasn't a co-writing process so much as a tag-team process. I started it, Cathryn finished it. Basically, I pitched the idea, Eric approved it, and I got to work. A week or so later, Eric popped in and told me he needed me to write the very next episode, so he was pulling me off "Dream" and giving it to Cathryn. It had to do with the time crunch we faced going into the strike. I wrote “Jus In Bello” in a lot less time than we usually have to finish an episode. But I don't want to make a meal out of it, because this sort of thing happens all the time when you're making TV. Time runs out, things get shuffled, writers and directors get reassigned, and you write as fast as you can. It's actually one of my favorite things about the job. I thrive under the pressure of a tight deadline.

And about "Dream" -- I have to hand it to Cat. It was a really peculiar concept to be handed in half-baked form, and I hadn't done an entirely convincing job with the logic of the episode when I handed it over. But Cat tackled it, fixed all the lame bits she'd inherited from me, and made it much better than it was.

FFN: Dean had a break through there, where he realized he didn't want or deserve to go to hell. Meanwhile, Sam said in "Malleus Maleficarum" he thinks he has to become more like Dean. How are things going to develop emotionally for both of them in the next batch of episodes?
SG: Dean may not want to go to hell, but it's looming large. They're scrambling. Trying everything they can think of -- and failing over and over. We've been saying all season that Dean's deal isn't something he can just cleverly wiggle out of. He doesn’t know which demon holds his contract, and even if he did, Bela’s taken the Colt so he has zero leverage. He is deeply screwed. That’s taking a major emotional toll on both brothers.

FFN: In "Jus in Bello" you introduced a new big bad, Lilith. Can you talk about her, give us a hint of what's ahead?
SG: You'll be seeing more of her. And it won't be pretty. In "Jus In Bello" we learned that Lilith is extremely powerful. Flick of her hand, police station explodes. In coming episodes, you'll see that she's also smart. Which is bad news for Sam, obviously.

FFN: Agent Henriksen is a popular character, and his interaction with the Winchesters has been terrific. Please tell me there's a chance he survived!
SG: Well, since you asked so politely... Seriously, though -- even if he didn't survive, since when is death the last we see of people on Supernatural?

FFN: Those matching tattoos are pretty cool. How long has that been planned?
SG: I remember talking about it with Ben Edlund last season, while Cat was writing "Born Under A Bad Sign." We agreed that if we were Sam, the first thing we'd do is take that anti-possession amulet and head for the nearest tattoo parlor. He reminded me of it while we were working on “Jus In Bello,” because breaking out the amulets was an important story point in that episode. So I stuck it in there, and it made for a nice moment. It’s like, of course Sam and Dean have matching tats. How could it be any other way? By the way, I'll be convinced we're truly a cult hit when a fan gets the same tattoo.

FFN: The fans seem divided on Ruby and Bela, some like them and some don't. Do you read the fan reactions online?
SG: Sure, I occasionally go online -- in small portions. And with a grain of rock salt. We sometimes talk about fan reaction in the room, because we're clear that we make this show for the fans. We're not a big, vanilla procedural crime drama that zillions of folks watch while also checking their email and flipping through tabloids and doing their nails; we're a scrappy little genre show with a small audience of incredibly devoted fans. They turn off all the lights, they pop popcorn, they sit down, and they devour the show. I've seen posts that say “Here’s what I noticed the third time I watched the episode.” I mean, you've gotta respect that. Our fans are not fucking around.

So -- all that said, we knew going into this season that we were going to have to win the fans over with the new characters. And we also knew Ruby would be an easier sale -- we find out quickly that she’s a demon. There’s a lot of precedent for demon characters on Supernatural, male and female. And her twist -- her insistence that she is not the enemy -- is intriguing.

As for Bela, the writers were all excited by the idea of her. A person who moves through the supernatural world in a very different way than Sam and Dean, with different goals. I've seen “I HATE HER!” responses, but here’s the thing: we don't want you to love her. She’s a self-interested, wily mercenary who put our heroes directly in the line of fire with no remorse. You're never going to love her. Hopefully, you'll love to hate her. That’s the sweet spot.

FFN: Can you tell us about Ruby and Bela's role the rest of the season?
SG: Ruby is invested in the demon war and in Sam; we'll see more of her in that context. I'm enjoying her role in that story arc, because even though she's proven herself time and again to be a strong ally, there's always that underlying tension. Because she's a demon, and everything Sam and Dean know of demons tells them not to trust her. As for Bela -- well, she swiped the Colt and led Henriksen to the boys, which led to a bunch of demons attacking them. Dean is pretty into the idea of killing her.

FFN: A lot of people want to know if we're going to see Ellen again.
SG: Yup! Season finale.

FFN: Any type of character you'd introduce into the hunting world and haven't been able to yet?
SG: I'm writing the penultimate episode of the season right now, and it introduces a new hunter. I don't want to say too much about him, because today he’s a paranoid survivalist type, but by the time the episode’s finished he might be a friendly female goatherd from Normandy. Each of the writers has an idea or two for a hunter, and we wait to see where we can plug ‘em in. It’s all about waiting for right story.
